Climate and Fisheries Data Analysis

Overview

Contributed to a lecturer's research project on Lemuru fish (Sardinella lemuru) catch data analysis in Bali Strait using MATLAB. Participated in this short-term project as the lecturer was my thesis examiner, and I had the relevant MATLAB skills. The study investigated the correlation between fisheries productivity and El Niño and La Niña climate phenomena. My role focused on processing specific datasets (highlighted in red circles in documentation) to understand how climate variability affects fish catch patterns.

Analysis Workflow

  • Data Collection & Preparation - Gathered Lemuru fish catch data and climate indices (ONI, SOI) for Bali Strait waters
  • Data Processing - Cleaned and organized fisheries data using MATLAB, performed quality control and validation
  • Statistical Analysis - Conducted correlation analysis between fish catch and El Niño/La Niña events
  • Spatial Analysis - Analyzed catch distribution patterns across different fishing zones in Bali Strait
  • Visualization & Reporting - Created comprehensive plots, maps, and delivered analysis results with documentation

Results

  • Successfully identified correlation patterns between Lemuru catch and ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation) events
  • Determined optimal fishing periods based on climate phase analysis
  • Generated spatial distribution maps showing catch productivity zones
  • Provided insights for sustainable fisheries management under climate variability
