Overview
Provided marine modelling services for a client's thesis research, focusing on microplastics transport modelling in Cilacap waters using MIKE Zero software. This advanced hydrodynamic and particle tracking model enabled simulation of microplastics movement patterns, helping to understand the distribution and fate of marine plastic pollution in coastal environments.
Modelling Workflow
- Data Collection & Preparation - Gathered oceanographic data such as wind speed, wind direction, bathymetry, tides, and sea temperature of Cilacap waters
- Model Setup - Configured MIKE Zero hydrodynamic model with appropriate mesh resolution, boundary conditions, and forcing parameters
- Particle Tracking - Implemented microplastics particle tracking module to simulate transport and dispersion patterns
- Simulation & Analysis - Ran model scenarios to predict microplastics movement under different environmental conditions and microplastics type
- Visualization & Reporting - Created spatial maps and analysis results using QGIS and delivered comprehensive documentation
Results
- Successfully simulated microplastics transport patterns in Cilacap coastal waters
- Identified key accumulation zones and dispersion pathways for marine plastic pollution
- Generated spatial distribution maps showing predicted microplastics concentration
- Provided actionable insights for coastal management and pollution mitigation strategies
